Thurgood Marshall’s own Students for Shelter club Volunteers to Feed the Homeless

By Finley Spandle

This year, a new club has stepped into the spotlight at Thurgood Marshall Secondary: Students For Shelter, which aims to volunteer at homeless shelters across the Pasadena area.

Students For Shelter (SFS) held its first event (“Adopt-a-Meal event”) October 4th at the Union Station Adult Center, a homeless shelter in the Civic Center District, where eight students volunteered.

By October 25, they had already held a separate event at a location in South Pasadena where five students participated. There was also a club fundraiser at Prime Pizza in Altadena on October 21.

Joining the club now is easy— they invite prospective members to join them at AP World History teacher Joshua Tornek’s classroom at M276, where they have club meetings every Thursday.

The club has over 15 members and the club president is sophomore Jack Steward-Oaten. One member, sophomore Joshua Boer, who participated in multiple events, accepted an interview about SfS.

“I joined Students for Shelter because I need community service hours, and feeding homeless people is a great way to complete my community service hours. The president of Students for Shelter club went out of his way to make the club known. He told everyone he knew he was making a club,” Boer said.

“[Steward-Oaten] didn’t just stop there. He was persistent and asking people to join the club and reminding them.” According to Boer.

Boer also made sure to mention that, “the leaders of the club are great at making sure people know what they’re doing.” He urges people to join SfS.

No plans for future events have been cemented but they plan to continue their work after Winter Break. Dates for events are voted on at the weekly meetings. As of Winter Break, there have been four events in total.
